Union Soldier Capt. William Edward Miller

Medal of Honor Recipient Capt. William Edward Miller

Gettysburg National Cemetery

Last year during a parent getaway while the kids were still in school, we took a day trip to Gettysburg. I’m pretty sure we aren’t the only parents to have enjoyed a trip or two like this. We visited many of places while we were there and I’m pretty sure there is another day trip in the works. While there we walked through the Soldier’s National Cemetery, it is a National Military Park that is worth a visit. There were a number of Union Soldier tombstones.

One of the many tombstones that caught my attention was that of William Edward Miller. He was enlisted as a Union Soldier on the 17th of August in 1861, as a 2nd Lieutenant in Newville, Cumberland County the state of Pennsylvania. On the 1st of September 1862 he was promoted to Captain and mustered out on the 24th of August in 1864. He received an Civil War Medal of Honor in 1897, Capt. Miller and his Troop H, was successful in keeping the Virginia Regiment at bay and forcing them to fall back.
